Seasonal Guide

Best time to fish
Gatun Lake, Panama.

A month-by-month breakdown of the peacock bass bite on Gatun Lake. When to book, what to expect, how to plan around weather.

Overview

Peacock bass fish year-round
on Gatun Lake.

Unlike migratory species that appear seasonally, peacock bass are resident predators. They eat every month of the year on Gatun Lake. That said, the fishing changes by seasons and months. Here is a season breakdown from someone who is on the water year-round.

Written by Capt. Luke Cowan, owner and lead guide at PanalakeSportfishing on the western shore of Gatun Lake at La Arenosa.

The two seasons

Dry season vs wet season.

Panama has two distinct seasons. The dry season runs roughly mid-December through April, with stable weather, clear water, and light winds. The wet season runs May through November, with daily afternoon rain, rising lake levels, and refreshed structure. Both seasons fish well, they just fish differently.

Dry season

December to April.

December to April is peak season on Gatun Lake. Water levels drop, concentrating fish around remaining structure. Water clarity improves, which makes visual sight fishing possible. Winds are lighter, meaning we can fish coves and points that get blown out in the wet season.

Topwater is at its best. Poppers and walking baits produce explosive strikes at dawn and in the last hour of light. Live bait fishing is consistent all day. Trophy potential is highest because the drop in water forces larger fish into smaller areas.

Trade-off: this is also the busiest season for tourism in Panama. Book early, especially December through February.

Wet season

May to November.

Wet season does not mean bad fishing. It means different fishing, and often better than people expect. Rising lake levels flood new structure, creating fresh ambush cover the fish have not seen. Cloud cover often means the topwater bite lasts later in the morning. Fewer tourists on the water means we have prime spots to ourselves.

Trade-off: expect afternoon thunderstorms. We often start early and finish fishing before the daily rain, or we fish through it. Rain gear is essential.

Time of day

Best hours on the water.

Regardless of season, the first two hours of daylight and the last two hours before sunset are often bite windows. Peacock bass are ambush predators, and low-light conditions favor them. Overcast days extend these windows into the mid-morning and afternoon. However, when the sun starts coming up fish often push into deeper water and concentrate. We drop live bait on them, and it can make for very productive fishing days.

Weather considerations

What if it rains?

We fish in rain. In the wet season it is expected. We only cancel for lightning or unsafe wind. Our boats have full top-cover roofs for sun and rain protection, so you stay dry even in a downpour. If the rain gets really heavy we will come in, or wait it out if it is a fast-moving storm that will blow through.

If we have to cancel from our end due to unsafe conditions, you get a full refund or reschedule. If you are worried about weather during your dates, message us. We will give you an honest read on what to expect.
