Charter Trips
Trophy water, wild jungle.
Gatun Lake was carved out a century ago to feed the Panama Canal. The flooded jungle became a peacock bass factory. And it's all yours to fish.
The water
A lake built by accident,
fished by design.
More than 160 square miles of drowned forest, jungle channels, and endless coves, built when engineers flooded the Chagres Valley to feed the canal. What the canal needed was deep water. What we got was the world's most productive peacock bass habitat. Stumps and submerged timber everywhere. Bait stacked in the creek mouths. Apex predators in every shadow. We've spent thousands of trips learning where they live, when they feed, and how to put you on them.
Four species worth the flight
What you'll catch.
Peacock Bass · Cichla ocellaris
The reason you came.
Aggressive topwater blow-ups, brutal first runs, colors that don't look real. The peacocks on Gatun Lake typically run 1 to 2 pounds. Anything over 3 is a big fish, and a 5-pounder is a true trophy. Fish pushing 7 lbs have been landed in recent years, but they're rare. Targetable year-round, with live bait producing the most consistent numbers and sizes.
Snook · Centropomus undecimalis
The clever one.
Ambush predator that lives in the deeper canals and structure. They hit hard, fight harder, and don't make mistakes twice. We target them with hard jerkbaits, deeper-diving jerkbaits, and crankbaits worked through known holding water. Best on overcast days and falling light.
Jack Crevalle · Caranx hippos
Pure muscle.
They dump line with long, mean runs. Hold on tight when you hook one because they don't quit until you have them in the net. We don't target jacks on jigs. They want poppers, stick baits, and twitchbaits. When the schools push bait to the surface and the water boils, drop a popper in and hang on.
Tarpon · Megalops atlanticus
The silver king.
Rare on Gatun Lake. We don't promise tarpon, and most trips won't encounter them, but unforgettable when they happen. Silver, airborne, and unforgiving. Schools occasionally push through the lake's deeper water. Hook one and you'll see it three feet out of the water before the line goes tight. When it happens, it's the catch of the trip.
How we fish
Topwater explosions to deep structure.
Four approaches we run depending on weather, season, and what's biting. You don't need to know any of this. The captain reads the water and you cast where he points.
01
Live bait
Our number-one approach for peacock bass. They eat live bait year-round, and it's how we put guests on the biggest fish in the biggest numbers.
02
Jerkbaits
Hard jerkbaits and deeper-diving versions. Peacock and snook both smash them on sight. When the fish are active, this is the most consistent artificial bite on the lake.
03
Poppers
When the season's right and the fish are moving shallow chasing bait, poppers come out. The coolest, most fun way to catch peacock bass. Surface explosions on every cast when it's on.
04
Jigs & twitchbaits
Small crappie jigs, bucktail jigs, and twitchbaits round out the box. We almost never throw soft plastics. Hard baits and live bait do the work on Gatun Lake.
